Tennis: Dexter’s “special” year ends with 12th place finish at D-2 State Finals 

The Dexter tennis team placed had a “great” showing at the Division 2 State Finals over the weekend at Hope College. The Dreadnaughts scored five points to finish tied with Trenton for 12th place out of the top 21 D-2 teams in the state.

Grand Rapids Forest Hills Northern finished first with 31 points followed by Birmingham Seaholm (29), Bloomfield Hills Marian (26), East Grand Rapids (21) and Mattawan (16).

Dexter seniors Maggie Tucker, Lauren Filipiak and Kendall Rosevelt all picked up wins at the State Finals. Tucker and Rosevelt each picked up two points for their wins.

Tucker defeated Okemos 6-4, 6-4 in her first match at two singles. She lost 6-0, 6-0 in her second match to Forest Hills Northern. At three singles, Filipiak defeated Wyandotte Roosevelt 7-6(5), 6-2 in her opening-round match before falling 6-1, 6-0 to Seaholm. Rosevelt defeated Trenton 6-3, 6-2 in a second-round match before falling 6-0, 6-0 to Forest Hills Northern.

“This season was a great success,” said Dexter Coach Robert Smothers. “These girls worked hard and earned everything they accomplished. I am so proud of these girls.”

Smothers praised his senior leaders for leading the way all the way to the State Finals.

“Senior captain Sage Roperti along with the previously mentioned seniors were such phenomenal leaders this year,” he said. “I know I speak for the entire team when I say we will miss them dearly next year.

“This was a special year that will always hold a big place in my heart and will be the most memorable of the 16 years I have had the privilege to coach.”
