District Softball: Pioneers fall to Belleville 3-1 despite strong effort

Down 1-0 to Belleville in a District Final game on Monday at Saline, the Pioneers answered with a run in the fourth inning to square the game at 1-1. But the difference in the game was a couple timely hits by the Tigers in the fifth inning and the lack of the big hit later in the game by Pioneer as Belleville won 3-1 in a well-played final by both sides.

The Tigers celebrated the District title but the Pioneers had nothing to hang their helmets about after playing such a solid game and finishing the season playing its best softball of the year.

Trailing by a run in the fourth, Rory Campbell ripped a lead-off double to right-center. A bloop single by Ceci Maixner put runners on first and third with no outs. Maixner was thrown out at second on a steal attempt but Campbell scored on the play to tie the game at 1-1. Maxine Mucha ripped a two-out triple but was stranded.

After the Tigers took the lead with a two-run fifth inning, the Pioneers looked to bounce back in the bottom of the frame. Ella Markley singled up the middle to get things rolling and with one out, Ella Roberts singled. But with runners at second and third and two outs, the Pioneers flew out to right field.

Mimi Maixner took the loss for Pioneer. The senior was impressive in her final trip into the circle for the Pioneers. She allowed six hits and three runs while striking out six and walking none.

Mucha and Roberts each had two hits to lead the offense.
