“Sad News:” Community reacts to the closing of a Dexter institution

An outpouring of support and positive thoughts for the Schmid family on social media followed the news that the Dexter Pharmacy was going out of business immediately – a note from the owners was posted on the door and on their web site Friday morning.

Dexter community members are sharing favorite memories, thanks for the services provided by the pharmacy and words of support for the family and staff.

“It’s sad to see a local and supportive business close,” said Superintendent Chris Timmis. “ Dexter has small-town charm and the Dexter Pharmacy has been an integral part of welcoming community members to Dexter.”

WeLoveDexter writer Melanie McIntyre said: “So sad to hear this news. I shop at the pharmacy often, and was always able to find just what I needed for gifts, health and office supplies and candy – especially those delicious caramels! I was always greeted by friendly faces and received courteous help whenever I asked. We will truly miss having this small business in Dexter.”

“This is a wonderful family,” said Barbara Bell, longtime resident. “I’m so sad for them and hopeful that the community is KIND to them about this heartbreaking situation.”

Dexter resident Melissa Hart said: “It’s sad that I won’t be able to run to Dexter Pharmacy to buy poster board or a tri-fold board when my kids ask last minute for a school project. It’s also sad for the kids who would walk to school and won’t be able to stop and get snacks anymore.”

“Been getting prescriptions there since you were on main street,” said Linda Weber on Facebook. “Fred was always so helpful and kind. Best wishes and prayers for you all. You will be greatly missed”

“It’s sad because it’s local and we could always count on them being there,” said Dexter resident Sandy Goetz.
