For programs such as Dexter soccer, it’s all about the postseason. The Dreadnaughts have been a powerhouse on the pitch for the past decade plus and this season is shaping up to another year of big results and bigger expectations.
“The season has been good,” says Coach Jamie Lewis. “We have had key contributions from the whole roster.”
Dexter started out the season with a very difficult schedule and had a few areas to shore up but the defense has been an area of strength with Wiley Smith in goal.
“It took a few games to figure out the back line but center backs Connor Simpson and Jack Kolka have really been strong with outside backs Will Palazzolo, Harrison Kim, and Daryl Bell playing at a high level,” Lewis says. “Midfielders Andrew Scherer, Ben Pritchard and Nick Williamson have gotten better every game and forwards Noah Lewis, Evan Rushbrook, and Hayden Newton have created a lot of chances and their movement has been getting better every game.”
The Dreads are 8-0-5 on the season and have outscored their opponents 32-10. Newton leads the team with nine goals. Lewis has four goals and five assists on the season.
Like Lewis said, the whole team has been in on the success. And that was certainly the case last week when Dexter hosted Pinckney on Senior Night. It was only fitting that the seniors led the way.
Pinckney scored first on a great left footed volley while both teams traded good opportunities to score.
At around 15 minutes, Dexter tied the game on a great steal and set up by Henrick Ansen (a senior Foreign Exchange Student from Sweeden) who found Noah Lewis (senior captain) at the far post for a goal. Lewis scored to even the game at 1-1.
With about 10 minutes left in the half, senior Evan Rushbrook was knocked down in the box after a nifty spin move. The PK was converted by junior captain Nick Williamson.
A few minutes later, sophomore Connor Simpson hit a perfectly weighted long ball to Hayden Newton (junior captain) who finished it in the bottom left corner for a 3-1 lead.
In the first few minutes of the second half, Dexter’s high press got a turnover and senior Niska Richards found senior Evan Rushbrook for a 4-1 lead.
The Dreads finished with a 4-1 win over SEC foe Pinckney.
Every Dexter player saw the field and senior goal keeper Ian Morrison got the start and win for the Dreads in net with Peter Hauman finishing the game in the second half.
Seniors honored: Henrick Ansen (Sweeden), Trevor Beck, Jack Evans, Harrison Kim, Owen Laverty, Noah Lewis, Braden Lint, Ian Morrison, Max Nevin, Niska Richards, Evan Rushbrook, and Grant Wagner.
The Dreads followed that win with another win – 2-0 over Monroe in another SEC match.
