Girls Golf: Dexter finishes fifth (second in White Division) at SEC Tournament

The Dexter girls’ golf team fired a team score of 399 to finish fifth overall on Wednesday at the SEC Tournament at Rustic Glen Golf Club in Saline. The Dreadnaughts finished second to Pinckney in the SEC White Division race and second overall to the Pirates on the season.

Pioneer capped off its perfect 13-0 record in the regular season with a first-place finish. The Pioneers finished with a team score of 348 to edge Skyline for the title. The Eagles shot a 360 to place second.

Pinckney was third (373), Bedford fourth (389), Dexter fifth (399), Jackson sixth (407) and Saline seventh (409).

The conditions were not ideal – rainy, windy and chilly – but many players still put up quality scores.

The top 10 players are named All-Conference and at the top of the scorecard was Pioneer junior Amaya Melendez who shot a tournament-best 78, one stroke better than Bedford’s Emma Mulder. Pioneer had two other players make the All-SEC team: Mackenzie Rooney (87) and Sooah Jung (90). Skyline, which hosted the event, placed three players on the All-Conference team: Adie Maki (80), Nikki Lama (87) and Cammi Tircio (90).

The Dreadnaughts finished the SEC regular-season with 20 match points and earned 24 from the tournament to finish with 44 points, six behind Pinckney. Jackson was third in the White Division with 34 points followed by Tecumseh (28), Chelsea (22) and Lincoln (12).

Dexter had three golfers place in the top 10 on the White Division scorecard on Wednesday. Gabby Napolitan fired a 93 to lead the Dreadnaughts. Ellen Barnes (100) and Caitlin Kimmel (101) also had solid rounds for Dexter.

Olivia Naylor shot a 105, Mackenzie Gordon fired a 107 and Lauren Romine carded a 111 for Dexter.

Napolitan and Barnes finished fourth and fifth respectively in the overall White Division individual standings.

Pioneer is currently ranked seventh in the state by the Michigan Interscholastic Golf Coaches Association. Northville is ranked first followed by Brighton, Grosse Pointe South, Plymouth, Bloomfield Hills and Rochester Adams.

Dexter is heading to the Division 2 Regional at Mason on Oct. 10-11 at Eldorado Golf Course. The top three teams advance to the state finals on Oct. 18-19 at Forest Akers East in East Lansing.
