Volleyball: Dexter clinches league title in thrilling five-set SEC White Division match

With big matches just around the corner, including Chelsea in the Dig Pink match, Pioneer at home for Senior Night and Saline in the opening round of Districts, the Dexter volleyball team appears to be on point.

The Dreadnaughts knocked off SEC White Division rival Pinckney on Tuesday. The Dreads won a thrilling five-set match, 3-2. The competitive nature of the competition should only help Dexter toughen up and gain confidence for their upcoming challenges that await them.

Dexter clinched the SEC White Division title and improved to 27-6-1 on the season with the victory over the host Pirates.

Dexter started strong with a 25-18 win in the opener but got crushed 25-8 in the second game. How did the Dreads respond? They played much better in game three but lost a heartbreaker 26-24.

It would have been easy to conclude that it wasn’t their night. But the Dreadnaughts never take the easy conclusion. That’s how you win 27 matches – you fight back and fight back Dexter did.

The Dreadnaughts dominated game four with a 25-15 win. And finished off the Pirates 15-11 in a close final match to take the victory back to Dexter.

Quinn LaFontaine led Dexter with 11 kills. Hanna Quinn had nine and Avery Goodrich and Cami Fischer each contributed seven as the Dreads displayed a huge team effort in this one.

Speaking of effort, Delaney Arnedt had 23 assists and Eleanor King (who also had five kills) had 19 assists.

Arnedt (22), LaFontaine (20), King (16), Livvy Mellifont (15) and Goodrich (9) handled the bulk of the serves for Dexter.

LaFontaine, who had a huge night for the Dreadnaughts, led the team with 34 digs. Mellifont had 20, Goodrich 18, King 14 and Arnedt 11.

The Dreadnaughts play Saturday at the Saline Invitational. They host Chelsea on Tuesday, Oct. 22 in the Dig Pink match.
