The Dexter Community Orchestra, led by music director Dr. David Schultz, will kick off its 2019-20 season Sunday, Nov. 3 with “Let’s Dance!”, a program designed to please people of all ages and musical tastes. The concert begins at 4 p.m. at Dexter High School, and will feature Lansing-based musician Rodney Page, whose eclectic style defies description.
A classically-trained violinist whose tastes range from hip-hop to country, Mr. Page is a graduate of Michigan State University where he earned a master’s degree in music education. He has performed at venues ranging from Harlem’s famous Apollo Theater to the Smoothie King Center in New Orleans, and has jammed with Motown legend Martha Reaves. He will play the electric violin with the orchestra on his own composition, “Danzon”, a Latin-infused romp with plenty of percussion. The concert will also include music by Borodin, Sibelius, Debussy, Ginastera and Granados.
Although the six pieces selected for the program by Dr. Schultz represent many different genres and styles of dance music, they have several things in common: They are tuneful, highly rhythmic, accessible to listeners of all ages, and just plain FUN. The selections are all short enough to match the attention span of school-age children.
As always, DCO concerts are free. Donations to help defer the orchestra’s expenses are gratefully accepted. Mr. Page is appearing through a sponsorship by Old National Bank.
