Field Hockey: Top-ranked Dexter advances, face Marian in today’s (Oct. 24) semifinal

The semifinals are set in field hockey and the Final Four sets up two intriguing match-ups in Division 1.

Pioneer plays Saline in the first semifinal at 4:30 p.m. followed by top-ranked Dexter taking on Marian in the second game – both games are at Huron HS. The championship game is at 2 p.m. at Chelsea High School.

The Pioneers advanced with an impressive 4-0 win over Novi. After a scoreless first half, Pioneer netted four goals in the second half. May Flanders scored twice and Natalie Millman and Isa Keen each scored once for the Pioneers. Serena Brimacombe and Mary Huffman had assists for the winners.

Ella Roberts and Laura Simon pitched the shutout in the cage.

The Dreadnaughts hosted Detroit Country Day and kept the visitors off the scoreboard in a 3-0 win to advance to the semifinals.

Kylee Niswonger, with an assist from Claire Vaughn, put the Dreads on the board less than 2 minutes into the game. Abigail Tamer scored at the 27:06 mark to push Dexter’s lead to 2-0.

Niswonger, with an assist from Tamer, scored the only goal in the second half at 14:35.

Maggie Jones had two saves to earn the shutout.

Marion scored three first-half goals and added two more in the second half for a 5-0 win over defending champion Huron. Saline scored all six goals in the second half for a 6-0 win over Grand Rapids Forest Hills.

Division 2

Top-ranked Skyline won its first game of the postseason 8-0 over Grosse Pointe South. The Eagles netted four goals in the first half and four more in the second half.

The Eagles will face University Liggett in a semifinal game at 7 p.m. on Thursday at Brighton. Chelsea plays Cranbrook-Kingswood in the other semifinal. The finals are at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
