First a song …
Home where my thought’s escaping
Home where my music’s playing
Home where my love lies waiting
Home where the Dreads are playing …
For the first time in the history of Dexter football, the Dreadnaughts will host a MHSAA playoff football game. The Dreadnaughts learned at 7:52 p.m. on Sunday during the MHSAA Selection Show that they will HOST Livonia Churchill at 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 1.
The Chargers went 5-4 in the Kensington Lakes East Division. Churchill won its last four games of the season to reach the playoffs including a 27-0 win over Howell on Friday night.
The other side of the District bracket features Jackson (5-4) at Battle Creek Lakeview (9-0).
Dexter finished the regular season with an 8-1 record including 6-1 in the SEC White Division. The Dreads won eight in a row after dropping the season opener to Chelsea 22-17.
The Dreadnaughts finished the regular season at home on Friday with a 65-6 blowout win over Croswell-Lexington. It was a fitting conclusion for a team that scored points at a record pace, setting the school record for most points scored in a season.
Dexter finished with 330 points of offense while the defense allowed just 130 points. Pinckney was second in the division for most points scored, 92 points less than the Dreads.
Other playoff games of note include Ann Arbor Father Gabriel Richard (5-4) at Whitmore Lake (7-2) in a Division 5 District 1 Region 4 game; Ann Arbor Pioneer (5-4) will play at Woodhaven (9-0) in Division 1; Saline (8-1) will play at Belleville (9-0) in Division 1; Parma Western (7-2) at Chelsea (9-0) in Division 3; and Pinckney (7-2) at Coldwater (8-1) in Division 3.
A record 54 schools with the highest playoff averages were added to fill out the field of 256 teams. Schools were then put in order by enrollment with the largest placed in Division 1 and the next 32 in Division 2 until eight divisions were created.
Only 202 schools won six or more games this past season.
Each District features four teams and each Region has eight teams. Teams in each District are ranked by playoff point average. The team with the highest playoff average will host the first three weeks.
