Swimming: Dreadnaughts land two state champions as they finish fourth at D-2 Finals

The Dexter swimming and diving team continued its excellence on the sport’s biggest stage on Saturday. The Dreadnaughts finished fourth overall with 178 points at the Division 2 MHSAA State Swimming and Diving Finals at Oakland University.

Birmingham Seaholm swam away with the championship trophy as they racked up an impressive 304 points. Grosse Pointe South was second with 222 points followed by Birmingham Groves with 198. Following the Dreadnaughts were Midland Dow (151), Farmington (143) and Portage Central (124) in the 34-team field.

Dexter, which had two state champions this season, finished 11th last year after finishing second in 2017.

The Dreadnaughts took 13th place in the opening medley relay. The team of Jackie Wyka, Zoe Michos, Lauren Witte and Samantha Durrant went 1:53.48.

Dexter had two swimmers in the top eight in the 200 freestyle. Junior Charlotte Schultz took fourth in 1:52.47 and junior Hailee Waters was eighth in 1:54.94.

In the 50 free, Durrant was 16th in 25.12.

As expected, Dexter dominated the diving. Freshman Lily Witte was state champion with a total of 468.40 points, beating out Okemos freshman Caroline Li (426.30). Fellow freshman sensation Vivian Kinnard was fifth with 399.55 points and sophomore Elysa Grossman was eighth with 365.25 points.

Dexter’s Waters was seventh in the 500 free with a time of 5:10.39.

The Dreadnaughts were third in the 200 free relay as the team of Durrant, Holly Durand, Waters and Schultz went 1:37.95.

Schultz was the state champion in the backstroke with a winning time of 56.42. It was close as Grosse Pointe South’s Brooke Lezotte was second in 56.74. Witte was 11th in 59.94.

The team of Elizabeth Merz, Waters, Durand and Schultz took fifth in the 400 free relay in 3:36.31.
