Dexter’s Vaughn among Roxy Block Award winners for field hockey

The Michigan HS Field Hockey Association announced this week the Roxy Block Award winner for 2019.

Block is a pioneer and leader in the sport of field hockey in Michigan. Her involvement in field hockey can consistently be identified by her love of the game and her interest in growing the game.  From developing recreation field hockey in the Ann Arbor area to co-founding the Washtenaw Whippets, which led to the development of the Saline, Dexter, Chelsea and Pinckney High School programs, growth of field hockey in the greater Washtenaw County area and the state of Michigan has Roxy’s strength and design behind it.

To be considered for the Roxy Block Sportsmanship Award, an athlete must be a varsity player who is a natural leader and exemplifies great sportsmanship. She must have documented public service, be an outstanding student-athlete, have a positive impact on her team and have an abundant love for the sport of field hockey

This year’s winners were Dexter senior Claire Vaughn; Pinckney senior Evelyn Trumpey; and Saline senior Bridget Skelly.

Vaughn was a two-time captain of the state champion Dreadnaughts. She helped set the tone of hard work, dedication and love of the game for her teammates. For the last four years she has volunteered and worked with athletes of all ages in several of the Community Education Field Hockey programs.

Outside of field hockey, Vaughn can be found tutoring middle school students, working at local road races and volunteering on fun runs for children with disabilities.

“When looking at the criteria for this award and knowing Roxy, Claire is exemplary,” said Dexter coach Trish Machemer. “She has always led by example. From the Legacy book, Claire is the one who will sweep the shed and never leaves team responsibilities for someone else.  She is kind and giving. She is even keeled and does not rattle. She brings a sense of peace and stability to our team.”

Vaughn is an outstanding student and was ranked first in her class last year. She will be attending Cornell University and will be a part of the field hockey team.
