Seasonal Events and Live Reindeer at Dexter District Library

The start of winter brings an enjoyable variety of monthly and holiday themed events for all ages to the Dexter District Library.  Everyone is invited to attend these free programs.

The Friends annual Holiday Used Book Sale is Saturday, December 7 from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm.  The Book Sales offer a variety of material including picture books, young readers, mystery, science fiction, horror, romance, general fiction, non-fiction, and much more.  The Friends canvas book bags are available at book sales and at the circulation desk for only $12. Or, you may also purchase a canvas bag at the book sale for $15 and fill it with as many items at the sale, for free.

Stop by the Library terrace on Sunday, December 8 from 2:00 to 4:00 pm and get up close and personal with two live reindeer from Rooftop Landing Reindeer Farm. On the lower level, we’ll have a variety of holiday crafts for kids.  Registration is not required.  Everyone is welcome.

Wednesday, December 11 is an early release day for Dexter Community Schools.  Teens in grades 5 through 12 are invited to celebrate the ninth film in the Star Wars saga by decorating their own t-shirt with their favorite characters.  We’ll also be making buttons and magnets.  Registration is required, call 734-426-4477 to register.

Wednesday, December 12 at 10:00 am brings Holiday Crafts for Adults. Join David Larwa as he returns to the Library to create star ornaments and origami dove candle holders. Registration is required, register at the Adult Service Desk or call 734-426-4477.

On Tuesday, December 17, children ages six and under, along with their caregiver, can stop by at 11:00 am for our Drop-In Holiday Story Time.  Join us for 30 minutes of stories and music celebrating winter and the holidays.  Light refreshments will be provided following story time and registration is not required.

Movie & Popcorn for Kids will be held on Monday, December 23 at 11:00 am.  Dexter Community Schools are closed and we will be showing Toy Story 4 (2019).  When a new toy called “Forky” joins Woody and the gang, a road trip alongside old and new friends reveals how big the world can be for a toy.  Rated G – 100 minutes.

The Library will be closed on Tuesday, December 24 and Wednesday, December 25 for the Christmas holiday.  We will also be closed on Tuesday, December 31 and Wednesday, January 1 for the New Year holiday.

On Friday, December 27 from 2:00 to 3:00 pm, stop by for Makerspace. This is a fun, drop-In program for grades K through 8.  Dexter Schools are closed, make, build, craft and explore.  Participate in a variety of open-ended activities.  We supply the materials and you supply the imagination. Registration is not required.

Registration for Winter Story Times begins Friday, December 27.  Winter Story Times for toddlers and preschoolers will start on Monday, January 13 and run until Thursday, March 5. Registration is required and parents or caregivers of children may register in person at the Library or by calling 734-426-4477. Space is limited so registration will be on a first come first served basis.

Drop-In Story Times for all ages will be offered on Thursdays at 10:30 am in the lower level meeting room from January 16 to March 5.  Infants are welcome at story times with their siblings.  Parents or caregivers are required to attend. Daycare Centers are welcome to all Drop-In Story Times.  Each session lasts approximately 30 minutes.

On Monday, December 30 from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm, join us for New Year’s Hats and Noisemakers Drop-In Craft.  Children of all ages are invited to stop in and make New Year’s hats and noisemakers to ring in the New Year.  Registration is not required.

Thursday, January 2 from 1:00 to 2:30 pm, we have Winter Wonderland Cupcake Wars.Teens in grades 5 through 12 are invited to battle other participants by designing the ultimate winter scene using cupcakes.  Working within our guidelines, a time limit, and with the supplies we provide, each participant will design a scene to submit for judging.  Prizes awarded in three categories.  Registration begins Monday, December 2.

Friday, January 3 at 11:00 am, The Storytellers Present: Most Tropical – Music from the Caribbean
We’re spending the coldest month of the year thinking warm thoughts at the Library with  tropical-themed events for all ages planned throughout the month. Musical Folktales is an upbeat concert of interactive stories, beautiful music, humor, interesting musical instruments and hands-on activities. The Storytellers are Audrey and Bob Allison, who use voice and vocal effects to captivate young audiences. Their music spans the globe from Australia to Brazil to the Caribbean Islands.  Join us as they return to the Library to celebrate tropical music.  Adults and kids of all ages are welcome, registration is not required.
