Michigan High School Field Hockey Association announced that Dexter midfielder Abigail Tamer was named the winner of the first ever Michigan Player of the Year award.
The award recognizes the single athlete who is the top standout in the state for the season.
The criteria include strong academic standing, major impact on her team in the season, exemplification of sportsmanship and a statistical leader in her position. As a Captain this year, she helped lead her team to a regular season Co Championship, SEC Red Conference Championship and Division 1 State Championship.
Tamer tallied impressive stats this year with 36 goals scored and 14 assists in the regular season. She added to that during the playoffs scoring 5 additional goals and assists for 2 more, contributing to an impressive 77 percent of the Dreadnaught’s offensive production in their playoff run.
Routinely tasked with marking the opposing teams top player, Tamer was part of the consecutive shutouts, posted by the Dreadnaughts throughout their championship playoff run.
Tamer has been playing field hockey in Dexter since 7th grade and excels both on the field and academically in school, with a GPA at the end of her sophomore year of 4.0 She was named to the US Women’s Under 17 Junior National Field Hockey Team this past year,the first Michigan high school player ever named to the squad.
