Boys Swimming: Dexter places sixth at competitive Warrior Relays

It was an impressive showing for a few local teams at the annual Waterford Kettering Warrior Relays on Saturday. In a very competitive 11-team field, Pioneer swam first overall with 370 points, beating out U-D HS (310) and Birmingham Groves (302).

Huron finished fifth overall with 278 points, just 16 points behind Birmingham Brother Rice. Dexter, the defending Division 2 state champions, placed sixth overall with 266 points, just 12 behind the River Rats and eight ahead of Cranbrook Kingswood.

The Pioneers started strong with a win in the 400 medley relay. The team of Caleb Rice, Robert Yang, Sung-Jae Lee and Cameron Williston went 3:41.32 to take first place. Dexter’s team of Zach Norris, Stuart Bovich, Tanner Sharp and Paul Schaefer went 3:49.71 to take fourth. Huron’s team of Ji Ung Hyun, Kenneth Jiang, Victor Foss Conti deFreitas and Ian Powell was eighth (4:12.10).

In the 800 free relay, Pioneer’s team of Gabriel Labadie, Jack Shemke, Alec Lipham and Teodor Jaworski took first in 7:22.24. Huron’s team of Eli Atkinson, Ben Hires, Drew Lindstrom and Dylan Schmitzerle was second in 7:34.80. Dexter’s team of Leo Varitek, Luke Saylor, Adam Hauser and Griffin Bartscht placed fourth in 7:58.81.

Pioneer’s team of Rice, Jack Wilkening, Ryan Hume and Justin Su took second in the 200 back relay in 1:41.33. Huron’s team of Andrew Ma, Bryce Yung, Alex Moskus and Joe O’Neal placed fifth (1:59.30). Dexter (Adam Bergen, Daniel Bialowicz, Jack Potsos and Grady Wheeler) was seventh (2:07.82).

Pioneer’s team of Koa Williams, Shemke, Lipham and Jaworski placed second in the 850 crescendo relay in 8:00.73. Dexter’s team of Lucas Greatorex, Sayler, Varitek and Schaefer placed fourth in 8:21.27. Huron’s team of Jaden Martin, Powell, Hires and Brian Moskus placed fifth in 8:43.00.

In the 200 fly relay, Pioneer’s team of Yang, Williams, Labadie and Su took second in 1:39.35. Dexter took third as the team of Bovich, Norris, Hauser and Sharp went 1:45.78. Huron’s team of Tyler Gibbs, Foss Conti deFreitas, Sean Underwood and Kevin Zhou placed sixth in 1:48.04.

It was back to the winner’s circle for the Pioneers in the 200 medley relay as the team of Wilkening, Hajra, Hume and Yang went 1:38.81. Huron’s foursome of Hyun, Jiang, Moskus and Lindstrom touched fifth in 1:50.27 and Dexter’s team of Wheeler, Griffin Patel, Lucas Greatorex and Daniel Bailowicz placed seventh in 2:06.7.

Pioneer won the 400 IM relay as the team of Rice, Williston, Hajra and Hume touched first in 3:44.37. Huron’s team of Atkinson, Gibbs, Zhou and Schmitzerle was fourth in 4:02.35. Dexter’s foursome of Norris, Bovich, Hauser and Bartscht was sixth in 4:12.13.

Another win for the Pioneers in the 200 free relay as the team of Williams, Shemke, Gabriel Sanchez-Burks and Jack DeBona took first in 1:32.49. Huron’s team of Brian Moskus, Powell, Alex Moskus and Sean Underwood took sixth in 1:40.85. Dexter’s team of Potsos, Bergen, Bartscht and Greatorex was eighth in 1:44.71.

In the 200 breaststroke relay, Pioneer’s group of Sung-Jae Lee, Samuel Fonte, Hajra and Gabriel Almeida went 1:56.48 to place second. Huron’s team of Zhou, Jiang, Schmitzerle and Gibbs placed fifth in 2:06.84. Dexter’s team of Patel, Potsos, Bergen and Bialowicz placed ninth in 2:21.15.

Pioneer touched second in the 400 free relay with the team of Jaworski, Lipham, Labadie and Williston (3:19.09). Dexter (Sharp, Sayler, Schaefer and Varitek) placed fourth in 3:22.88. Huron (Atkinson, Lindstrom, Hyun and Hires) was fifth in 3:31.93.
