High school hockey teams in Dexter, Chelsea and Saline have long been successful on the ice, but have been limited to boys’ programs. But that is about to change.
The Washtenaw United will be the name of a new girls’ hockey team featuring players outside Ann Arbor – which already has two teams (Pioneer and Skyron – a combination of players from Skyline and Huron). The new team will participate in the Metro Girls’ High School Hockey League for the 2020-21 season.
It wasn’t that long ago in field hockey that the Washtenaw Whippets featured players from Chelsea, Dexter and Manchester. A few years after that team was formed, Dexter and Chelsea branched off to form their own teams – both reached the State Finals this past season and the Dreadnaughts have won state titles in both Division 1 and Division 2.
The first informational meeting for Washtenaw United Girls’ High School Hockey will be Jan. 12 at 6 p.m. at the Ann Arbor Ice Cube in the Glass Room.
