Dexter girls’ basketball coach Lauren Thompson wants her Dreadnaughts to improve every time they step on the floor and gain as much experience as they can as they continue down this road of chasing an SEC title and taking aim at a District championship.
Dexter hit the road on Thursday and played a non-league game against a very good Lenawee Christian team. And despite a 51-43 loss it was a game to learn from, build on and improve after as they return to league action on Friday (Jan. 24) against Ypsilanti.
“It was a tough one but the girls played with everything in them,” Thompson said.
It was a game of big quarters. Dexter led 13-10 after a close opening period. But the Dreadnaughts outscored the Cougars 17-9 in the second quarter to take a 30-19 lead into halftime
Lenawee Christian returned the favor in the third quarter. The Cougars knocked down five triples and scored 21 points in the period. They took a 40-36 lead into the fourth quarter.
Lenawee Christian’s Dani Salenbien scored all of her team’s points in the fourth quarter. Eleven of her game-high 24 points came in the final period, including six points from the free-throw line. The Dreadnaughts scored seven points in the final period.
The Cougars made seven three-pointers in the game.
The Dreadnaughts also had the long ball going on Thursday. Dexter hit eight from beyond the arc, including four from sophomore Sydney Pnacek, who led the team with 14 points. Senior Kyleigh Valentine knocked down three triples and finished with 11 points.
Alayna Babut had eight points and Maddie Valentine and Brianna Rodriguez each scored four points.
