HWPI: Latest Border-to-Border Trail (B2B) Construction Updates

Huron Waterloo Pathways Initiative (HWPI) volunteers are working with the Washtenaw County Parks and Recreation Commission’s (WCPARC) Border-to-Border Trail (B2B) team, the Washtenaw County Road Commission (WCRC), and other state and local government agencies to develop new non-motorized trail segments. With the support of the entire community, these trail segments will ultimately complete the B2B throughout Washtenaw County and beyond.

The B2B is part of the Michigan Iron Belle Trail, a state-wide trail system.

B2B Trail Construction Updates from the Huron Waterloo Pathways Initiative:

Winter weather has us all longing for warmer days on the trail. Spring will bring continued B2B trail construction and two new trails segment opening. The 2020 trail projects are exciting and we cannot wait to share progress with you.

Huron River Drive Trail, Dexter Huron Metropark to Zeeb Road – The temporary bridge has been removed and the four remaining boardwalk sections are now complete. Construction crews have completed 90% of the trail restoration work and will finish this work later this spring. The trail is anticipated to be open for use by April 1st, with a ribbon cutting planned for mid-May.

Lyndon Township Trailhead – This work has stopped for the winter and is scheduled to begin again in early March.

M-52 Chelsea-Stockbridge Trail, Green Lake to North Territorial Road – Eighty percent of the path grading and earthwork balancing is complete, and fifty percent of the limestone base material has been placed. One of the two retaining walls behind the Lyndon Township Hall has also been finished. Operations have stopped for the winter, with plans to restart construction in early March.

M-52 Chelsea-Stockbridge Trail, Tunnel Project – This work is scheduled for an April or May start date. Stay tuned for information on temporary road closures.

Ypsilanti Trail Segments – The design work on Grove Road and Frog Island trail segments in Ypsilanti Township and the City of Ypsilanti is being finalized for a March bid opening, with construction planned for later this summer.

The completed B2B will feature The Huron River Greenway with eight themed bridges spanning the Huron River between Ann Arbor and Dexter, and The Huron Waterloo Loop, a continuous 44-mile pathway passing through the Waterloo and Pinckney State Recreational Areas and including a portion of the existing Lakelands Trail. By connecting and showcasing our communities, the HWPI hopes to encourage healthy and active lifestyles, while also promoting economic development.

Dexter-Ann Arbor Run heads to the starting line on May 3
