Swimming: Dreadnaughts touch second at SEC White Division meet

The defending state-champion Dexter Dreadnaughts prepared for the Division 2 State Finals with a strong showing on Friday and Saturday at the SEC White Division Conference Meet at Chelsea.

The MHSAA D-2 State Finals are March 13-14 at the Holland Aquatic Center. The MHSAA Diving Regionals are Thursday, March 5.

The Dreadnaughts finished second last weekend at the SEC White Division meet with 385.5 points. Pinckney won the eight-team event with 427 points. Jackson was third (239), Chelsea fourth (227) and Lincoln fifth (168).

The Dexter foursome of Zach Norris, Stuart Bovich, Tanner Sharp and Griffin Bartscht took second in the medley relay with a time of 1:42.87.

The Dreadnaughts went two-three in the 200 free with Leo Varitek in second (1:49.28) and Paul Schaefer third (1:49.50).

In the IM, Norris was fourth (2:03.51) and Adam Hauser sixth (2:09.29).

Sharp, a senior, led the Dreadnaughts in the 50 free with a first-place time of 22.02. Luke Sayler tied for fourth in 22.82.

Dexter sophomore Cole Warren won the diving with 311.75 points. And it wasn’t even close. Pinckney’s Griffin Stahl was second with 224.60 points.

Bovich touched fourth in the butterfly with a time of 57.97. Varitek was sixth (58.71).

Sayler touched a close second in the 100 free. The senior finished in 49.40, just behind Chelsea’s Landen Collins (49.02).

The Dreadnaughts had a strong showing in the 500 free. Schaefer was second (4:58.13), Hauser third (5:02.42), Bartscht fourth (5:09.24) and Joe Sharon sixth (5:17.87).

Dexter won the 200 free relay. The team of Sharp, Varitek, Sayler and Schaefer won with a time of 1:31.13.

In the backstroke, Norris touched second (56.30) and Bovich was fifth (58.26).

Sharp was second in the breaststroke with a time of 59.96. Bartscht was sixth for the Dreads (1:07.28).

Dexter finished the meet with a second place in the 400 free relay. The team of Sayler, Schaefer, Varitek and Norris finished in 3:19.73.
