Ann Arbor – While the world wonders when sports will make their return after the cancellation of everything from Spring Rec and Ed Soccer to the 2020 Olympics, the endurance race company, Epic Races’ CEO, Eva Solomon, is busily finding inspiration for new events aimed to keep racers excited about training and competing in the wake of COVID-19.
With the Ann Arbor Goddess run complete, and the Tri Goddess Triathlon postponed until August, Solomon was looking for an all-new Goddess event to keep her goddess racers busy in the interim. That’s where the concept of an all-new virtual race that captures the company’s Michigan pride at a time that Michigan is finding itself in the national spotlight was born.
“The idea of Oh MI Goddess, which has also been coined “That woman race from Michigan” is a chance for us to mark this moment where everyone is talking about Michigan. It’s not a political statement, it doesn’t matter if you agree or disagree with our governor. This race is about celebrating being proud Michiganders!” says Solomon.
The Oh MI Goddess Half Marathon & 5K can be completed anywhere you choose from June 1 – July 12. Virtual racing is the perfect answer to the question of how endurance athletes can compete while honoring social distancing rules. The ability to race whenever and wherever you choose also accommodates the needs of new racers.
Training for your first half marathon can be daunting so Oh MI Goddess includes a training plan for first-timers. A virtual race allows participants to choose an appropriate course location and time to run to help make each racer’s experience a success.
If you choose the half marathon distance of Oh MI Goddess you’re also completing the first part of the Michigan MarathonHER, a revival of a previous Epic event that celebrates women completing 26.2 miles in two phases. Run the Oh MI Goddess virtual half marathon, and then complete the American Home Fitness Women Run the D half marathon (live or virtual), in September, and you’ve earned yourself the title of a Michigan MarathonHER.
These two races raise money for three women focused charities: American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women campaign, Girls on the Run, and Rebel Nell.
While Michigan’s time in the National spotlight won’t last forever, the fun and innovative racing offered by Epic Races shows no sign of slowing down and Solomon and her team are eager to continue their commitment to empowering women racers from across the state.
