Cross Country: Dexter girls run record to 3-0 with a strong start

In Dexter’s season-opener, Pinckney grabbed the top two spots in the girls’ cross country meet at Manly Bennett Park as the two SEC teams met on the trails to begin the 2020 season. But the Dreadnaughts came back with a strong group of runners who took six of the next seven spots to score a 29-29 tie with the Pirates.

The Dexter girls were victorious in a tie-breaker that went to scoring the sixth runner. The meet was a hot and humid day with less than ideal conditions but the Dreadnaughts persevered in the end to earn the win.

Junior Amanda McGill took third place for Dexter with a time of 22:45.0. After the Pirates took fourth, Dexter ran off the next five places: sophomore Chloe Sprague (23:11.0), Senior Abigail Fox (23:13.5), sophomore Megan O’Day (23.21.1), junior Jessica Hoehn (23:36.4) and senior Emma Hodder (23:38.5).

Dexter senior Faith Jones was 11th (23:39.0) and sophomore Quinn Hilla was 13th (24:22.7).

The Dreadnaughts followed up the season-opening victory by winning a tri-meet at Heritage Park in Adrian. Dexter finished with 24 points with Tecumseh second (31) and Adrian third (85). Tecumseh is the defending SEC White Champions.

McGill led Dexter with a strong second-place finish time of 20:50.11 and Jones had an impressive run with a fourth-place time of 22:00.73.

Sprague (22:16.98) was fifth, Fox (22:24.34) was sixth and O’Day (22.30.83) ran seventh for the winners.

Junior Hannah McComas was 11th (23:03.99), freshman Kate Varitek was 14th (23:15.88), Hodder ran 15th (23:18.22), sophomore Quinn Hilla was 16th (23:19.41), junior Sidney Streetman was 17th (23:27.70) and senior Allison Berkholz ran 18th (23:47.81) for Dexter.

Dexter is scheduled to run against Huron on Saturday, Sept. 12 at Hudson Mills.
