Down to the final putt: Dexter tops Saline by one stroke in SEC tri-meet

The Skyline girls’ golf team swung their record to a perfect 6-0 in the SEC on the young season after wins over Dexter and Saline on Wednesday in a tri-meet at Brookside GC in Saline.

The varsity played the front side while JV teed it up on the back side.

The varsity match came down to one stroke – yes, one made putt. One good chip. One save from the rough. They all count and it added up to a big win for the Dreadnaughts over Saline. Skyline took first place overall with a team score of 178 to remain undefeated in the SEC. Dexter fired a team score of 210, beating Saline (211) by one stroke.

“This is the second event we’ve been in where one team has edged another by one stroke,” said Skyline coach Ashley Mantha. “Fortunately, we have not been in that situation this season yet so I wanted to showcase it as a learning experience; you can’t give up while playing. We have experienced those heartbreaks in previous seasons. So even if it’s a ‘bad day’ for you; you never know what your teammates or opponents are doing. It’s you against the course and how well you can grind out the best you can that day.”

The Eagles were led by Adie Maki. The junior fired an impressive 38 for the lowest score of the day. Freshman Reva Patchava (45), and juniors Riya Patchava (46) and Lia Tomilo (49) broke 50 for the Eagles. Seniors Grace Hescheles fired a 51 and Alison Marshall shot a 63 to round out the Skyline scorecard.

All six Dexter players shot scores in the 50s led by junior Olivia Naylor who carded a 51. Juniors Clare McCormick and Hannah Finch each shot a 52 for the Dreadnaughts. Senior Julianne Browning shot a 55, junior Arion Sunstrum shot a 57 and junior Camryn Chase carded a 58.

Saline was led by senior Brittany Roberts, who fired a 51.

On the JV side of the course, the Eagles landed first with a 234 score beating Dexter (258) and Saline (266).

Sophomore Varsha Reddy led the young Eagles with a 57. Freshman Tess Bazzani (58), sophomore Nina Bendiab (59), freshman Lily Hescheles (60), junior Isabel Wroten (66) and senior Hailey Chaconas (83) contributed to the win.

Junior Emily Root led the Dexter JV with a 55. Junior Maddie Finch shot a 65, freshman Marissa Genske carded a 67 and freshman Shelby Waltz shot a 71 for the Dreadnaughts.
