Washtenaw Area Transportation Study reports 22 percent increase on B2B Trail in Dexter

Despite the pandemic, Washtenaw County is hitting the trail.

The Washtenaw Area Transportation Study (WATS), a multi-jurisdictional agency responsible for transportation planning in Washtenaw County, recently reported that usage of the Border 2 Border Trail has increased 22 percent.

WATS reports that 168,884 people used the B2B Trail segments in Dexter in June and August of this year compared to 131,318 during the same time period in 2019.

The Border-to-Border (B2B) Trail is a partially constructed non-motorized trail in Washtenaw County planned to cover approximately 35 miles (56 km) from Livingston County to Wayne County along the Huron River.

In 13 segments from A to M, it will link Huron-Clinton Metroparks with Dexter Township, the Village of Dexter, Scio Township, the City of Ann Arbor, Ann Arbor Township, Ypsilanti Township, and the City of Ypsilanti. Segment A is located on the Livingston County border to the north-west and M on the Wayne County border in the south-east.

The Washtenaw Area Transportation Study (WATS) is mandated by Federal law to provide a continuing, cooperative and comprehensive transportation planning process, which guides the expenditure of state and federal transportation funds in Washtenaw County. WATS annually establishes project priorities for consideration by the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) when programming transportation funds. In addition, WATS continually monitors the current condition of the county’s transportation system, including roads, bicycle and pedestrian paths, bridges, and public transit.

2045 Long Range Transportation Plan

WATS released the 2045 Long Range Transportation Plan for Washtenaw County earlier this year.  The Plan explores the anticipated trends in transportation technology, trip making behavior and policies to address priorities and ongoing needs.  The Plan was approved by the WATS Policy Committee on March 20, 2019.
