The Dexter volleyball team has set a strong foundation for a big season. First, they have experience on the roster with six seniors and five juniors along with three talented sophomores. Second, the Dreadnaughts have opened strong, winning both SEC games and taking three other games with the only loss to always state-powerhouse Brighton.
The experience along with the fast start has the Dreadnaughts spiking with plenty of confidence heading into a huge SEC showdown with visiting Pinckney on Tuesday, Sept. 29.
“Out of the typical nine starters we played with last year, six are returning, including our two setters and our libero,” says Coach Liz Melvin, now in her third season with the Dreadnaughts. “The leadership, experience and consistency those three girls alone will bring is exciting to think about. Some of our new varsity players are extremely talented and will see significant playing time as well.”
With that comes high expectations, and the Dreads are not ducking from setting lofty goals.
“We expect to earn and to take the SEC White again this year,” Melvin says. “We also have our eyes set on winning our SEC crossover match and making it to the District finals.”
Dexter is coming off an amazing season in 2019. They finished 30-9-1 and went undefeated in the SEC White to claim the division title. They lost to Saline in a District semifinal game.
Among Dexter’s key returning players are Eleanor King (starting 6 rotation setter/right side, First Team All-SEC); Olivia (Livvy) Mellifont (Libero, First Team All-SEC); and Jordan Kless (strong outside hitter, Honorable Mention All-SEC).
“Our theme this year is “Earn It,” says Melvin. “It was something I referred to a lot with our girls at the end of last season, and they want to continue with that same reminder this season.
“They are so excited to get back in the gym and willing to work hard to keep it safe. And they aren’t going to let this season go by without working to earn their goals. Achievements can be worked towards, time and effort put in, but it all comes down to if you earn it in the moment.”
Melvin is expecting a tough game on Tuesday night – one of those “Earn It” games.
“The SEC White is going to be very competitive this year,” she says. “Dexter has a history of winning it, but we are going to have to really work to earn it this year. Pinckney gave us a run for our money last season, and I don’t expect them to let up this season.”
