The Dexter field hockey team is sticking to the plan – keep on working hard, improving, learning and getting better. After their first stumble of the year – if you consider a tie a stumble – the Dreadnaughts bounced back with a dominant two-game winning streak to finish the week.
Dexter, the defending D-1 state champions, improved to 11-0-1 on the season with wins over Huron and Chelsea by a combined score of 9-1. Not counting the team’s 3-3 draw with Skyline on Oct. 5, the Dreads have allowed just two goals all season. Now that’s playing some serious defense.
Dexter scored first and last in a 4-1 win over Huron on Wednesday. Dexter led 1-0 at halftime thanks to a goal by Evelyn Clemens with an assist from Abby Tamer.
Huron scored at 1:23 of the third quarter to tie the game at 1-1. But Dexter would score the next three goals to finish off the River Rats.
Kylee Niswonger took a pass from Tamer and gave Dexter the lead back just before the end of the third period. Tamer (with an assist from Marissa Skinner) and Giuliana Rokke had fourth-quarter goals for the Dreads.
Esther Hashikawa and Hannah Baldwin split the goalie duties for the Dreads.
On Friday, Dexter scored three goals in the first period and cruised by rival Chelsea 5-0. Hashikawa and Baldwin combined for their ninth shutout of the season.
Hauman (from Skinner) gave Dexter a 1-0 lead. Tamer scored two in a row to push Dexter’s lead to 3-0. Skinner assisted on Tamer’s first goal.
Rokke scored to make it 4-0 and Hauman (from Tamer) scored her second of the game to make it 5-0 before halftime.
Dexter plays East Grand Rapids on Monday. The game with Huron on Wednesday has been cancelled.
