As the Beatles like to say, “it’s getting better all the time.”
The Dexter competitive cheer team had its best showing of the season – and it’s best finish – on Saturday at the Pinckney Invitational D-1 Session. The tournament was broken into three varsity sessions and one junior varsity session.
The Dreadnaughts were coming off a tournament in Melvindale where they got to see two of the best programs in the state – defending D-1 state champion Allen Park and Gibraltar Carlson – and maybe that inspired them or motivated them to take their routines to the next level.
Dexter finished with 674.94 points on the day which landed them in second place – and not far off first place. Lincoln Park, those Downriver teams are pretty good, took first overall with 692.26 points. Grand Ledge was second with 647.08 points and Holt placed third with 576.20 points.
The Dreadnaughts started strong, finishing with 218 points in the first round. They scored 192.24 in the second round for a 410.24 total heading into the final round. The Railsplitters had the lead after two rounds with 426.66. In round three, Dexter scored 264.70 points to finish the day with an impressive 674.94.
Dexter would have won the D3 session and would have finished second to Swartz Creek (689.36) in the D2 session.
The Dreadnaughts return to Melvindale on Monday (Feb. 22) for another invitational.
