The Washtenaw United high school hockey team is in its first season in the Michigan Metro Girls’ High School League – but they aren’t playing like a first-year team.
Washtenaw United won another game on Saturday with a 3-1 win over Pioneer at the Ann Arbor Ice Cube. The team serves school districts within Washtenaw County outside of Ann Arbor and includes players from Dexter, Saline, Manchester and Chelsea.
In the win over Pioneer, Washtenaw scored two third-period goals to break a 1-1 tie and shoot this game into the win column. Pioneer outshot Washtenaw 26-12 including 11-5 in the final period.
Pioneer got on the board first when Nadia Tuzinsky scored with an assist from Senna Neubauer at 3:38 of the opening period. But just over a minute later, Washtenaw’s Jillian Eggleston scored an unassisted goal on the power play to tie the game at 1-1.
Neither team scored in the second period.
In the third period, Reese Caryl and Linzy Costella scored to give Washtenaw the win. Eggleston picked up assists on both goals.
It was Washtenaw’s fourth consecutive win but the streak ended on Sunday when Bloomfield scored with less than 2 minutes left to break a 3-3 tie in a very competitive game.
Washtenaw plays on Wednesday at Grosse Pointe North. They also play at home on Saturday (Feb. 27) against Grand Rapids 19u team (non high school opponent) at 3 p.m.
Pioneer lost another close game on Sunday, falling 2-0 to Walled Lake Wild. The Pioneers outshot the Wild 27-16.
Pioneer plays at Farmington Hills Mercy on Monday (Feb. 22) – their third game in a row.
Washtenaw will host Pioneer again on Thursday, March 4 at the Cube.
