Hockey: Four third-period goals push Skyline past Dexter

Skyline’s Jamie Newton had a hat trick and teammates Sei Nakamura and AJ Schmunk each scored twice as the Eagles broke open a 4-2 game with four third-period goals in an 8-3 victory Wednesday over Dexter at the Arctic Coliseum in Chelsea.

“We have things we need to tighten up and need some secondary scoring if we are going to make a run in playoffs,” said Jake Stripp of his undefeated Eagles. “I love the way we are competing right now though, and the kids are having fun.”

There were three penalties in the first period and one in the third but in between the penalty box was a busy place. Dexter was called for five penalties in the second period including two interference calls. Skyline had three players sent off for penalties in the second.

Newton started the scoring with two goals in the first period. Llan Reichbart and Ryan Garrett earned assists on the second goal.

Dexter answered with 5:04 left in the first period when Joey Fracassi scored with assists from Gabe Burke and Dylan Hutchison.

In the second period, Skyline’s AJ Schmunk scored with assists from Newton and Jack Bazzani. The Eagles took a 4-1 lead at 11:11 of the second period when Nakamura scored unassisted.

The Dreadnaughts finished the scoring in the period when Burke scored with assists from Fracassi and Shay Ohtonen.

The Eagles took a 6-2 lead in the third period with goals by Zack Schueler and Nakamura, who assisted on the first goal.

Dexter’s Luc Chesney scored with an assist from Fracassi to cut the lead to 6-3 but the Eagles finished off the scoring with two goals in the last 7 minutes. Schmunk scored his second of the game at 7:06 from Nakamura and Victor Bian and Newton scored his third of the game at 5:45 with assists from Schmunk and Nakamura.
