Swimming: Dreadnaughts drop first meet of the season to talented Skyline

After a pool full of easy victories, the Dexter swimming and diving team splashed up against some strong competition when the previously unbeaten Dreadnaughts travelled to Ann Arbor on Saturday to take on the Skyline Eagles in an SEC cross-over dual-meet.

Both teams feature strong swimmers and the times and performances were impressive on both sides of the pool as Skyline edged Dexter 100-80. The Dreadnaughts fall to 9-1 on the season.

The opening medley relay set the tone for the entire meet as Dexter edged Skyline to the wall. The Dexter team of Stuart Bovich, Adam Hauser, Clayton Kinnard and Zach Norris touched first in 1 minute, 39.73 seconds. Skyline’s team of Chris Kurniawan, Daniel Osterholzer, Evan McKelvey and Jack Staunton were close second in 1:41.70.

Skyline junior Ben Kurniawan won the 200 free in 1:46.52. Dexter’s Leo Varitek was second in 1:46.52 and Skyline’s Ben Deininger was third in 1:53.41.

In the 200 IM, Skyline freshman Lucas Caswell touched first in 2:02.92. Dexter’s Hauser was second (2:03.35) and Staunton was third (2:14.35) for the Eagles.

Kinnard, the speedy Dexter senior, won the 50 free in 21.46 seconds. Skyline took the next three spots with McKelvey second in 22.24, Daniel Koselka third (23.42) and Andrew Xi fourth (24.26). Jack Potsos was fifth for Dexter in 24.64.

Dexter’s Cole Warren won the diving with 254.35 points and Skyline’s Soren Nielsen was second with 146.25.

McKelvey won the butterfly in 53.93 for the Eagles. Varitek took a close second in 55.68 and John Evangelista was third for Skyline in 1:00.23.

Dexter went one-two in the 100 free with Norris first (48.21) and Matthew Resende second (51.04). Skyline’s Deininger was third (51.36) and Staunton fourth (52.43).

After sprinting to a win in the 50 free, Dexter’s Kinnard went the distance to win the 500 free. The senior went 4:46.95 to finish first for the Dreadnaughts. Teammate Dylan O’Connor was second in 5:13.58. Skyline’s Koselka was third (5:17.74) and teammate Chris Kurniawan was fourth (5:51.18).

Skyline went one-two in the 200 free relay. The team of Ben Kurniawan, Caswell, Deininger and McKelvey touched first in 1:31.12 followed by the team of Staunton, Evangelista, Ben Edlund and Koselka that finished in 1:37.02. Dexter’s team of Adam Bergen, Potsos, O’Connor and Otto Krueger was third in 1:45.35.

Skyline’s Ben Kurniawan won the backstroke in 55.85. Dexter’s Stuart Bovich was second in 57.10 and Caswell touched third and Owen Schadler fourth (1:00.74) for the Eagles in 57.90.

In the breaststroke, Skyline went one-two with Osterholzer (first, 1:02.43) and Conor Pyle (second, 1:03.57). Hauser was third (1:05.07) and Grady Wheeler fourth (1:12.67) for Dexter.

The Dreadnaughts won the 400 free relay as the team of Varitek, Resende, Kinnard and Hauser finished in 3:20.80. The Skyline team of Ben Kurniawan, Deininger, Xi and Caswell took second in 3:30.40.
