Boys Basketball: Dexter runs off two more wins to improve to 11-3 on the season

This is a good time of the year to be on a roll – and the Dexter boys’ basketball team is rolling along with a big game coming up on Friday against Chelsea and then Districts starting next week.

It’s been a strange and challenging year for every team but a very good one for Dexter. The Dreadnaughts improved to 11-3 on the season following Saturday’s 55-39 win over Lenawee Christian.

Playing back-to-back games, it took a few trips up and down the floor before the Dreadnaughts found their legs and their groove against a good LC team. The Dreadnaughts trailed 14-8 after the first quarter and were down 24-19 at halftime.

But Coach Jason Rushton’s halftime chat must have done the trick as Dexter came out flying in the second half. The Dreads outscored LC 22-4 in the third quarter, led by eight points from Colin Parachek and seven from Evan Haroldson. The Dreads also outscored LC 14-11 in the fourth quarter to lock up the victory.

Parachek had a monster game. The senior finished with 14 points, 11 rebounds and five steals. Junior point guard Cal Bavineau continued a strong week – heck, strong season – with 14 points (eight in the fourth quarter) and five assists. Haroldson added 11 points and Ty Rychener was a great spark off the bench with eight points and four steals.

On Friday, Dexter knocked off Tecumseh by a similar score, 56-38, during the annual Senior Night game. This time, Dexter put the game in the win column with a strong second quarter. After leading 11-10 after the first 8 minutes, Dexter went on a 24-7 run – led by three triples from Haroldson – to take a 35-17 halftime lead.

The Dreadnaughts put the game out of reach with a 13-6 third quarter.

Bavineau proved that he can not only dish it but fill it up as he led the Dreads with 19 points as he knocked down three triples and scored in every quarter. He also had four assists and three steals.

Parachek, Mr. Consistency for the Dreadnaughts, had 13 points, eight rebounds and four steals. Haroldson, only a sophomore, added 11 points. Senior Sam Sterlitz, a rock on defense all season, added six points, seven rebounds and SIX blocks. Ty Rychener had five points in the win.

Dexter plays at Adrian on Tuesday before hosting rival Chelsea on Friday.
