Swimming & Diving: Pioneer wins Mythical State Championship based on points; Dexter seventh

The 2021 Michigan High School boys’ swimming and diving Mythical State Championship rankings were released last week with the top spot dominated by Pioneer.

The mythical state meet, which combines the swims and dives of Divisions 1, 2 and 3 to compare and rank them in an effort to choose an overall winner for the state, is based on points each team receives in each event at the State Finals. First place gets 20 points, second place is 17, etc. There also are bonus points awarded for first place and relays are twice as many points as the individual events.

Pioneer was ranked first overall with 205 points while Saline was second with 194 points – both are D-1 programs. The Pioneers dominated the D-1 State Finals, racking up 369 points. Holland West Ottawa was second with 233.5 and Saline with third with 230 points.

In the Mythical State Championship rankings, Grosse Pointe South (D-2) was third with 123 points followed by Birmingham Seaholm (D-2) with 118.5 points, Holland West Ottawa (D-1) with 117.5 points and Northville (D-1) with 103 points.

The Dexter Dreadnaughts (above), who swam D-2 this year and finished fifth at the State Finals, was seventh overall with 102 points, just one point behind Northville.

Skyline, also a D-2 program, finished ninth with 87 points. The Eagles finished fourth at the D-2 State Finals last month.

D-2 Farmington was 10th (85 points), D-1 Catholic Central was 11th (84) and D-2 and SEC team Temperance Bedford 12th (80).

Huron was 51st with four points.
