Baseball: Dreadnaughts bounce back with impressive sweep of Pioneer

Before Wednesday’s loss in a non-league game, the Dexter baseball team hadn’t lost since April 24 against Saline. They had won 10 straight with a 3-3 tie in the mix before falling 12-1 to a very good St. Mary Prep team.

The Dreadnaughts wasted little time returning to the win column with a double-header sweep of host Pioneer on Saturday in an SEC cross-over game. Dexter took the first game 13-2 and finished off the sweep with a 15-9 win in the nightcap.

In the opener, Dexter scored four runs in the first inning. After Pioneer scored to cut the deficit to 5-1 after three, the Dreads scored three in the top of the fourth and added two in the six and three in the seventh.

Dexter had 11 hits and just one error while Pioneer had six hits and four errors.

Brennan Parachek worked the first five innings and allowed just four hits, two walks, one earned run while striking out nine. Ethan Hochendoner had three strikeouts in his two innings of work while keeping the Pioneers off the board.

Eight players had hits for the Dreadnaughts. Cole Arnedt had two hits, Joey Tessmer had two hits, a walk and scored four times and Zach Gullekson had a triple, two RBI and a run scored. Cam Rosen had a double and two RBI and Braeden Fuson had a hit and two runs scored.

The Dexter offense continued to shine in the second game as the Dreads pounded out 10 hits and scored three in the first, nine in the second and two in the third to take a 14-0 lead. Pioneer used nine hits to score three in the third, four in the fifth and two in the seventh.

Five Dexter pitchers recorded 10 strikeouts in the win. Starter Wyatt Novara, Andrew Basso and Davis Bennett each rung up three Pioneers, who did walk seven times.

Evan Krolewski was 1-for-1 with a triple, walk, three RBI and two runs scored. Rosen was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI, and Bennett was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
