Girls Track & Field: Dexter wins SEC league meet; Josie Mettes sets school record in pole vault

The Dexter girls’ track and field team competed at the SEC Conference Championships on Friday at Ypsilanti Lincoln High School. The Dreadnaughts crossed the finish line in first place with 153 points and a track full of strong performances.

Chelsea finished second with 133.5 points while Pinckney was third with 122.5. Lincoln was fourth (99), Tecumseh fifth (78.5), Jackson sixth (22) and Adrian seventh (18.5).

In the girls’ pole vault, Dexter senior Josie Mettes set a Dexter school-record with her first-place finish. Her vault of 12-8 was not only a Dexter record, but also leads the entire state.

Her sister, Sophie Mettes, took 2nd and is ranked No. 2 in the state.

Other top finishers were Gracie Burns 3rd in the 200m and 400m and Ashley Mitchell took 2nd in the 800m.

In the 1600m, Hannah McComas took 3rd and a 2nd place finish in the 3200m, while teammate Amanda McGill won the 3200, and Abigail Fox was 4th.

McGill and Mitchell were also part of the winning 4x800m relay, along with Dreadnaughts Megan O’Day, and Kate Varitek. Finishing the running events was a 2nd place finish in the 4x400m relay with Tatara, Mitchell, Hannah Berenson, and Burns.

Dexter’s girls dominated then field events. Besides the Mettes sisters going 1 and 2 in the pole vault, Dexter finished with 3 more places, taking 3rd, 5th, and 8th with Makenzie Stock, Abigail Van Noord, and Izabella Behnke respectively.

In the discus, senior Abby Marek took the top spot, followed by junior Katie Krueger in 2nd, and Sophomore Lily Trinkle taking 5th.

The high jump saw a 2nd and 3rd place finish by seniors Haley Craig, and Abigail Van Noord.
