Softball: Dexter heads to postseason with 24 wins but face state-ranked Howell

The Dexter softball team will play Howell at 10 a.m. on Saturday in a District semifinal game at Dexter. Howell defeated Brighton 10-0 in six innings on Tuesday in the only quarterfinal game of the tournament.

Pinckney will play Hartland in the other semifinal game. The finals are at 2:30 p.m. All games are at Dexter.

Howell defeated Hartland 1-0 in the KLAA Championship game last month and both teams are ranked in the state. Hartland was No. 2 and Howell No. 3 in Division 1 in the state before they met for the league title.

The Dreadnaughts roll into the postseason after an impressive season. They went 24-7 overall and won the SEC White Division title. The Dreads have won six straight heading into Districts including a tough 4-3 win on Tuesday over a very good and state-ranked Allen Park team. The Jaguars took a 2-1 lead in the fifth before Dexter put up three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Allen Park scored a run in the sixth but couldn’t get the tying run home.

Paige Sayler held the Jags to four hits, two earned runs and four walks. She had nine strikeouts in her seven innings of work.

Sam Sutton, Brenna Cassidy, Livvy Mellifont and Kylee Niswonger all had doubles for the Dreadnaughts. Mellifont and Niswonger each had two hits and Sutton had two RBI in the win.
