United Way of Washtenaw County (UWWC) distributed $40,000 to local human service organizations who delivered essential services during the COVID-19 pandemic and in doing so incurred unanticipated transportation costs associated with meeting community needs.
With the support of Toyota, UWWC created Nonprofit Transportation Relief grants to support local human service nonprofits and community groups working with populations impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The organizations receiving funds include: Family Empowerment Program, Friends in Deed, and Mentor2Youth. Funds helped people get to medical appointments, delivered food and medicine, and provided maintenance for agency vans.
“These Transportation Grants have provided opportunities for more than 750 youth and adults in our community. ” shared Pam Smith, CEO of United Way. “We are grateful to Toyota for making this possible. Our efforts continue to prioritize people who have been hardest hit by the ongoing pandemic.”
The grants provided critical needed services and for one agency, Friends in Deed, the grant supported their transportation program, which covers the car expenses of people with low incomes to ensure they have safe and reliable personal transportation to meet their family’s basic needs.
