Normally, a trip to the dentist is something done begrudgingly twice a year, if all goes well. But, Dexter Dental Studio has other plans. They are an innovative dental office that people will actually look forward to visiting. The first thing I noticed was the picture of the dental assistant, a furry dog who will help you stay calm during your appointment. Where was this idea when I was five? Dogs are great stress relievers and petting a dog while anxious soothes anxiety. The fact that I can pet a dog during cleaning has me already wanting to switch dentists.
I walked in and noticed the kid-friendly section to my left. To my right was a shelving unit of products. It appeared to be skincare and pampering items. A woman was checking out at the front. I’m a reporter, I’m nosey. I hear them discussing her in-house dental plan. Wait, in-house dental plan? Was I hearing correctly? An option for people without insurance? I listened more because I have an adult teenage son who does not have dental insurance and needs dental work. Where was this when I was a young adult waiting tables? You pay a yearly fee and get two cleanings, including X-rays plus one emergency visit per year.
Anything, in addition, is discounted with the membership, I believe the amount was 20 percent. In my experience, dental insurance doesn’t cover too much so this seems like as good an option as any. The dog’s emotional support really sweetens the deal. U of M dental school doesn’t offer emotional support dogs.
The dental offices appeared to be in the back, but to the right next to the shelves of products seemed to be an entirely different type of health care situation. It seemed like there was a spa within the dental office, a place you’d slip off to for some self-care and stress relief.
Better Belly Therapies had most of the rooms filled with clients.
“Our team of therapists combine craniosacral therapy, visceral manipulation, fascial release, physical therapy, and pelvic floor therapy to optimize everything from your nervous system to your belly.” To learn more about this alternative and holistic health service, you can check out their website HERE
I was able to sneak into the front room and get pictures before the first client arrived.
The Art of Beauty shares a space in the office as well. To be completely forthcoming, I’ve been a client of this business before and the owner is a personal friend as we both volunteer for the American Heart Association together; Fabiola Gisselle Garnett, or Fab, as most of her clients know her provides skin care, hair removal, and brow and lash enhancements. Fab was awarded runner-up for best esthetician of the year 2019 and 2020 in Washtenaw County. You can get a custom facial, where she will help you understand what your skin needs and provide advice for the products that will work best for your skin. She offers all the new trends in services including chemical peels, micro-needling, and probiotic treatments.
I’ve not only utilized Fabiola for my own skincare, but I’ve also sent my teen son to her. He’d grown a huge unibrow and my attempts to get him to take care of his skin were met with eye rolls. Fabiola made a few suggestions, and he intently listened. He walked out with tamed eyebrows and clean, clear skin with an at-home routine to follow.
If your teenager won’t listen to you because you are just a lame parent, send him or her to Fabiola, she’s way cooler than you and what she says is more important.

You can pop in on lunch or while the kids are at school. Come for cleaning and get a Keratin lash lift.
Dexter Dental offers more than just a healthy smile, you can also get healthy skin and body in the office too. I did ask if the in-house insurance applies to skincare or holistic health services and it does not. Fabiola said that she will be offering specials and discounts, so be sure to keep an eye out and take advantage.
