For the fourth consecutive season, the Dexter football team is heading to the postseason following another impressive regular season that saw the Dreadnaughts average more than 40 points per game despite playing a very competitive schedule.
It turns out that competitive schedule helped push Dexter into the postseason. They finished with a 5-4 record, one shy of a guaranteed spot in the playoffs. But after playing playoff teams Saline, Chelsea, Huron and Bedford, their strength of schedule was off the charts.
The Dreadnaughts scored 58 points in the MHSAA calculations, which was better than two teams in Division 2 Region 2 District 1. But still not good enough to host a playoff game.
Dexter will head down I-94 to Battle Creek to face Battle Creek Lakeview at 7 p.m. on Friday night.
The tough schedule not only helped get them in, but should prepare them for playoff-pressure football. Dexter’s last two games were against undefeated teams (Saline and Chelsea) so they won’t be in awe of playing Battle Creek Lakeview.
“I think we’re a battle-tested football team,” said Dexter Coach Phil Jacobs, following his team’s 41-20 loss to Chelsea. “The teams we have played in the [SEC] Red are big, physical, and fast, and we played right with them. I want to see us put this one to bed, be mentally in-tune in our practices, and live day-by-day with an extra week together.”
An extra week – at least.
Dexter lost the first game in its first two trips to the playoffs but knocked off Lincoln last year in a playoff game before falling to Livonia Churchill 52-35.
Lakeview is making its third straight trip to the postseason after finishing 6-3. Two of their three losses were to playoff teams including recent perennial state power River Rouge. The Spartans ride a two-game win streak into the playoffs after knocking off Lakeshore (44-29) and St. Joseph (16-10).
The winner of the Dexter-Lakeshore game will play the winner of the Jackson-Portage Central game. The Dreadnaughts could host that game if Jackson wins and of course they take care of business in Battle Creek.
