The Dexter boys’ basketball team is loading up on some elite competition, which should only help prepare them for the challenges ahead – including those in March. After facing state-ranked Detroit Catholic Central last week, the Dreadnaughts visited Ann Arbor Huron for a matchup with the River Rats, a perennial state power the last few years.
Outside of one quarter, this was an even contest between two of the top teams in the SEC Red Division. Huron led 16-15 after the first quarter before going on a 15-3 run in the second quarter to take a 31-18 lead at the break.
Both teams scored 15 in the third quarter and Dexter edged Huron 15-13 in the final quarter. But the damage was done in that second quarter as the River Rats managed a 59-48 victory over the Dreadnaughts.
Dexter falls to 4-2 overall and 3-1 in SEC Red.
“The second quarter got us as Huron played a complete 32 minutes of basketball,” said Dexter Coach Jason Rushton. “We knew coming into the Red this season was going to be a battle night in and night out. We’ll continue to improve and start putting together a solid 32 minutes as we keep working to get better.”

Dexter was led by another strong game from Cal Bavineau. The senior guard, one of the top playmakers (and quarterbacks) in the area, finished with 17 points and 4 assists.
Brennan Parachek, who missed the CC game, returned and added 13 points and 8 rebounds. Ty Rychener had 12 points and 6 rebounds. Evan Haroldson added four points.
Huron had eight players reach the scorebook including three in double figures. Enkidu Anthony scored 11 of his team-high 13 points in the first quarter. Adam Samaha knocked down a triple in each quarter and finished with 12 points. Percy Bates finished with 10 points and Macari Moore had eight. Both Braylon Dickerson and TJ Bell each scored six for the River Rats.
Huron will play at 11 a.m. on Saturday against Washtenaw Christian Academy in a non-league game.
Dexter will have another good test on the road Thursday as they travel to Arbor Prep in a game that was just added last Friday.
