The Dexter boys’ basketball team faced three quality opponents in a row over the last two weeks and improved each time they stepped on the floor.
Let’s recap.
Last week, Dexter played shorthanded against Detroit Catholic Central and the state-ranked Shamrocks proved to be too good on that night. On Tuesday, Dexter played at state powerhouse Ann Arbor Huron, and outside of a quarter, played even with the talented River Rats in an SEC loss.
On Thursday, Dexter hit the road again and played against undefeated Arbor Prep. This time, the Dreadnaughts put it all together and put it in the win column with an impressive 55-52 victory.
“The game was physical, fast paced and a very exciting 32 minutes of high school basketball,” said Dexter Coach Jason Rushton. “I thought we stuck to our game plan and responded to their runs very well throughout this game.”
Dexter led 15-12 after one quarter but were outscored 21-15 in the second quarter to trail 33-30 at the break. But the Dreadnaughts played a solid third quarter, outscoring their hosts 19-9 to take a 49-42 lead into the final quarter. Arbor Prep outscored Dexter 10-6 in the fourth quarter.
Brennan Parachek scored 15 points with 11 rebounds and 2 blocks. Ty Rychener had 15 points, 5 assists and 5 rebounds. Evan Haroldson added 13 points and 6 rebounds.
Cal Bavineau had 4 points with 6 assists and great on-the-ball defense in the second half on their tough guard Patrick Kombo (he had to play off of him in the first half due to foul trouble). Kombo finished with a game-high 20 points.
Dexter has a nice break before getting back into SEC action next Friday against another tough foe in Lincoln.
