Boys Basketball: Skyline Eagles fly past undermanned Dreadnaughts

When Dexter boys’ basketball coach Jason Rushton looks down his bench he feels bad for his players. And for very good reason.

“We have two kids in a walking boot, one with a broken nose and another with stitches down his lip and chin,” says Rushton. “We’re a little banged up, but that’s what’s great about these young guys, they keep battling.”

Rushton, always staying positive and finding the silver lining, says these unfortunate circumstances along with this difficult part of the schedule is all part of the process in their development and growth as a team.

“Obviously, having some guys out is not ideal, but we know what we’re capable of when they come back,” he says. “We’ll continue to work and get better – and tomorrow will be another tough test against a very good Summit Academy team.”

The Dreadnaughts welcomed a strong Skyline team on Friday night and the Eagles took advantage of their hurting hosts in a 72-43 win in an SEC Red matchup.

Skyline led 19-8 after one quarter and pushed the lead to 32-19 at halftime. Skyline outscored Dexter 20-11 in the third quarter and 20-13 in the fourth quarter.

Skyline’s Jayden Potts led all scorers with 23 points, including 14 in the second half. Ben Stille knocked down two triples and finished with 18 points, Sam Koelling had 12 points and Will Gardner scored nine for the Eagles.

Cal Bavineau led Dexter with 13 points, 5 assists and 4 rebounds. Ty Rychener and Cole Arnedt each had 8 points.

“I thought Joey Tessmer really showed some good things (Friday) for us as he had to step up a bit and had six points,” Rushton said.

Dexter plays against Summit Academy on Saturday at Chelsea. The Dreads play at Pioneer on Tuesday while Skyline hosts Monroe on Tuesday.
