Girls Basketball: Rodriguez helps lead Dreadnaughts over Bedford in SEC Red clash

Talk about switching gears.

The Dexter girls’ basketball team did exactly that in the second quarter on Tuesday and kicked started their way to a 47-36 win over the Kicking Mules of Bedford in an SEC Red Division contest.

The Dreadnaughts didn’t exactly bust out of the gates. They managed just four points in the opening quarter and fell behind 8-4.

But they certainly cranked up the offense – and the defense – in the second quarter with a 15-2 run to take a 19-10 lead into halftime. Bedford outscored Dexter 11-9 in the third quarter to stay within striking distance but the Dreadnaughts put the game away with a 19-15 fourth quarter.

How good was Brianna Rodriguez – if you answered “very good,” you would be correct. The senior guard made 4 of 8 shots including two triples and converted 7 of 9 from the free-throw line to finish with a team-high 17 points. She also had a couple steals and assists.

Chloe Perry made 4 of 7 shots, including two triples, and finished with 11 points. The junior also had three steals, two assists and two rebounds.

Senior Maddie Valentine hit three triples and scored 11 points and also had three steals for the Dreadnaughts.

Senior Sydney Pnacek had an off shooting night (1 of 7) but still had five points along with a team-high six rebounds, two steals, two blocks and two assists – if the shots aren’t falling, do other things to help the team win, just like Pnacek did.

Alena Blumberg had three points and Maggie Lewis scored two.

Dexter faces Huron on Friday.
