After knocking off conference-leader Huron last week and then Lincoln on Tuesday, the Dexter Dreadnaughts boys’ basketball team defeated another talented Ann Arbor team on Friday with an impressive 52-46 win over Skyline.
“It was a game of runs, but I’m proud of the way we settled in and executed down the stretch to pick up a big win on the road over a good Skyline team,” said Dexter Coach Jason Rushton.
The game started with a 7-0 run by Skyline before Dexter called a timeout. The Dreadnaughts then went on a 7-0 run to tie the game up. Then Skyline went on an 8-0 run to take a 15-7 first quarter lead.
“We got off to a strong start in the first quarter with great half-court defense and pushing the ball and scoring inside,” said Skyline Coach Mike Lovelace. “The second quarter was more of the same to start as we pushed the lead to 22-7. We then had some poor shot selection and Dexter increased their intensity and gained some momentum.”
As the game of runs continued, Dexter went on the biggest one of the night as the Dreadnaughts scored 15 straight points to cut the deficit to 25-23 at halftime.
The third quarter was more evenly matched throughout with both teams playing hard on both ends. Skyline led 37-32 after three quarters.
The game intensity increased in the fourth quarter and Dexter was able to take care of the ball a little better than Skyline and had more shot attempts. The Dreadnaughts also got to the free-throw line more and converted their opportunities. Skyline also had a technical foul that led to four points.
Dexter gained the lead, spaced the court down the stretch and made free throws to win a very close game.
Dexter was 21 of 24 from the free-throw line while Skyline was 9 of 10.
Skyline outrebounded Dexter 26-16.
Cal Bavineau led the Dreadnaughts with 20 points and 8 assists. Ty Rychener had 15 points and 5 rebounds; Evan Haroldson added 8 points; and Brennan Parachek chipped in with 7 points with 11 rebounds.
Skyline was led by Will Gardner (11 points, 4 rebounds, 3 steals), Jayden Potts (11 points), Sam Koelling (10 points), Ben Stille (8 points, 4 rebounds) and Ish Abdul-Aziz (4 points, 5 rebounds).
