Dexter and Detroit Country Day split a pair of one-run games on Saturday in a non-league doubleheader at Country Day. The first game was more of a pitcher’s duel while the second game featured plenty of offense and a comeback by the home that fell just short.
Drew Basso had a strong outing on the mound in the opener for the Dreadnaughts. He allowed just one earned run and three hits with five strikeouts.
Wyatt Novara hit a home run in the second inning to put Dexter on the board. Country Day scored one in the fourth and two in the sixth. The Dreadnaughts scored a run in the seventh on an RBI by Garrett Sharp that plated Cole Arnedt (two hits including a double) but couldn’t get the tying run across.
Tucker Dunn, Cam Rosen and AJ Vaughn also had hits for the visitors.
In the nightcap, Dexter pounded out nine hits and led 4-0 after three and 9-4 after five in a 9-8 win to earn the split.
Payton Hendricks had two big hits and drove in FIVE runs for the Dreadnaughts.
Vaughn, Braeden Fuson (two runs and a walk) and Davis Bennett (one run, one RBI) also had two hits for Dexter. Joey Tessmer had a big day with one hit, two walks, two runs scored and two RBI.
Brian Matthews started and worked three innings. He allowed just two earned runs and had one strikeout. Tysen Bell and Sharp also pitched in the second game.
Dexter improves to 17-7 on the season. The Dreadnaughts play two against visiting Monroe on Monday. First pitch is at 4 p.m.
