Track & Field: Dreadnaughts run up some strong performances at annual Larry Steeb meet

Dexter hosted the annual Larry Steeb Meet of Champions at Al Ritt Stadium on Tuesday, and while there were no team scores kept, over 30 different schools had athletes competing in the highly competitive meet held prior to the State Championships.

On the track for the boys, Cole Cabana won the 200m dash with a time of 21.92, along with Cole Sheldon taking 8th at 23.53. Sheldon was also a top placer in the field events, winning the Pole Vault with a jump of 16’1”, and taking 4th in the Long Jump at 20’4”.

In the hurdle races, Francisco Morales-Leverett was 8th in the 110m High Hurdles at 16.47, and Josiah Hayter took 6th in the 300m Hurdles with a time of 43.05.

Dexter had two relay teams place as well. In the 4x800m the team of Owen Ackerman, Brandon Anderson, Adam Hauser, and Josh Lamb finished 2nd with a time of 8:22.08. The same four also ran in the Distance Medley Relay, crossing the finish with a time of 11:28.65, good enough for 7th.


Rounding out the rest of the Field events, Sam Fitzpatrick finished 3rd in the High Jump with a leap of 6’0”, and fellow high jumper Ryan Kerr finished 7th at 5’8”. Dexter had one other placer in the Pole Vault, Clark Sheldon finished 3rd at 13’0”.

On the girls side, the Dreads had strong performances in the field events.

Jamie Giese won the Shot Put, breaking her own school record that she set earlier this year with a big throw of 43’6.5”, and Lily Burns placed 8th with a put of 32’2.5”. Giese also placed 6th in the Discus with a throw of 103’9”. Sophia Mettes won the girls Pole Vault at 13’0”, and set a new Meet Record in the process, breaking her own record of 12’7” that she set last year.

Finishing out the Dexter placers in the Field events, Tia Schults tied for 7th in the High Jump at 4’8”.

Dexter placed three in the 400m dash. Hannah Berenson was 3rd with a time of 1:00.46, Gracie Burns was 5th at 1:01.43, and Ashley Mitchell was 8th at 1:02.35.

The 1600m run had Hannah McComas finishing 7th at 5:25.70, and in the girls Freshman 1600, Dexter placed three as well. Addison Bruckman won at 5:43.73, Addison Streetman finished 5th with a time of 6:26.63, and Rhya Wright was 6th, crossing the finish at 6:27.76.

Dexter’s 4x4oom relay was 3rd with Berenson, Meghan McGill, Mitchell, and Burns running 4:09.73, and the Distance Medley Relay was 7th with Annissa Sisson, Addison Bruckman, Sidney Streetman, and Antonia Bruckman timed at 14:02.81.

Dexter competes this Saturday at the Division 1 State Championships in Rockford.
