Dexter trap team enjoys plenty of success heading into fall season

The Dexter trap team has had a busy and successful 2022 so far with the Fall 2022 League starting on Sept. 18. Here is a look at the Dexter team’s accomplishments and events so far in 2022:

2022 Spring Dexter Trap Team (DTT) Results

The team, coached by Bill Hoffman, is part of the USA High School Clay Target League based in Minnesota with teams participating in 42 of the 50 states. They competed in the Spring 2022 League, Michigan State Championship and National Championship. The Ann Arbor Moose Sportsman’s League, Moose Lodge #1253, continues to host the team, providing the trap fields, safety officers and coaching staff. Local businesses and organizations that support the team include Pheasants Forever, Ann Arbor Eagles #2154, Barczak LLC, Flex N Gate, Boullion Sales and Dexter Family Eye Center. DTT meets on Monday evenings for practice and league competitions.

DTT fielded 24 shooters during the 2022 Spring League. Conferences are based on team sizes; DTT competed in Conference 8 with the top 18 scores posting against our competition each week. Other teams in Dexter’s conference were Chippewa Hills, Fenton, Hillsdale Academy, Lake Shore, Memphis, Sandusky, and Ubly.

The Dexter All-State team: (L – R) Alex Hoffman, Nicholas Hoffman, Head Coach Bill Hoffman, Lorenzo Biundo, Kylee Garcia and Kason Lambert. Not in the picture are Will Laurin and Devon Emrick.

The Dexter team performed well together; however, the rival Fenton team took first place in the conference with Dexter posting a second-place finish. Highlights for the 2022 Spring League include:

Alexander Hoffman (23.70 average) placed in the Top 10 Male Shooters in Conference with Lorenzo Biundo, Devon Emrick, and Nicholas Hoffman placing in the Top 20. How close is the competition? Only two targets separated #1 from #20. Shooter Will Laurin rounded out the Dexter Team members in the Top 25 Males in Conference. Alex also placed 16th overall in the state for the 2022 Spring League.

Lady Dread shooters occupied three of the Conference Top 10 Female Shooter positions with Kylee Garcia (22.40 average) coming in at third place, Whitley Fowler at #6 and Rebekah Murillo, #8. Five Lady Dreads total finished in the Top 25 with newcomer Lauren Simpson posting in the Top 25 in her first league!

Receiving special honors as part of the 2022 All-State Team were; Alex Hoffman, Lorenzo Biundo, Kason Lambert, Nicholas Hoffman, Will Laurin, Kylee Garcia, and Devon Emrick.

Two DTT members graduated this past spring: Kylee Garcia and Jack Papin (below). DTT coaches and shooters will miss their contributions to the team and wish them well on their future endeavors.

2022 State Championship

The State Championship was held on June 18, 2022, at the Michigan Trapshooting Association grounds in Mason. The event featured 1,012 shooters from 61 schools who competed in both team and individual formats. Dexter placed 13th overall with the following individual highlights: Rebekah Murillo: Top 20 JV-Female, Lorenzo Biundo: Top 25 Varsity-Male, and Kylee Garcia: Top 10 Varsity-Female.

2022 Fun Event

On June 28, 2022, DTT held it’s end of League Fun Event, when the team took on the Washtenaw County Sheriff Trapshooting Team, something the team, the sheriffs, and the friends and family of both look forward to every year.

2022 National Championship

The National Championship was held from July 7-10 at the Michigan Trapshooting Association grounds in Mason and featured 1,776 individual shooters and 230 teams from 20 states (Hawaii being the furthest!) competing over the course of three days.

DTT fielded two squads this year. Team #1 was composed of Lorenzo Biundo, Devon Emrick, Alex Hoffman, Nicholas Hoffman, Kason Lambert, and Connor Paris (alternate). Team #2 was composed of Brady Daugherty, Will Durbin, Whitley Fowler, Kylee Garcia, Will Laurin, and Jonathan Rombyer (alternate).

The Team qualifier was held on Friday, July 8 with Team #1 shooting a score of 98-97-96-91-78 (460) for 96th place. Team #2 scored 97-95-90-89-84 (455) for 116th place. Unfortunately, only the top 80 team scores make the cut for the Team Final.

The 100-target Individual Qualifier was held on Saturday, July 9 with DTT fielding 13 individual shooters. The cut to make the finals was the top 400 scores with Devon Emrick (93/100), Alex Hoffman (94/100), and Kason Lambert (94/100) making the mark.

On Sunday, July 10, in the Individual Finals, Alex Hoffman shot a 99/100 for a two-day total of 193/200 but that score would not fall within the Top 10 for an award. Devon Emrick posted a two-day total of 191/200 and Kason Lambert, a 186/200. Both Devon and Alex posted 75-straights, clearing 3 banks of 25 targets in a row, during individual competition. Throughout the Nationals, DTT posted 12 25-straights, five 50-straights, and two 75-straights.

Team members have been shooting at some local events, and practice will be picking up soon for the 2022 Fall League which starts in September. Follow the Dexter Trap Team at https://dextertrapteam.com/ and their Facebook page.
