Tennis: Dreadnaughts’ strong showing lands them fourth at tough Regionals

The Dexter boys’ tennis team had a strong showing at the Division 2 Regionals on Oct. 6 at East Lansing but came up one place and one point shy of qualifying for the State Finals.

Okemos netted first place with 24 points while East Lansing took second with 13 points. South Lyon East took third with nine points, just one point ahead of the Dreadnaughts. South Lyon and Lincoln each earned a point in the eight-team tournament.

At one singles, Dexter senior Noah Enyedy lost 6-2, 6-1 to South Lyon in the first round.

At two singles, Dexter senior Diego Reyes won his opening match 6-3, 6-2 over South Lyon and then won 6-3, 6-2 over South Lyon to reach the finals. He lost to Alex Zhang of Okemos 6-0, 6-0 in the championship match.

Dexter junior Andrew Guinta won his opening match 6-2, 6-0 over Lincoln in the first round at three singles. He lost 7-5, 6-3 to East Lansing in the semifinal match.

At four singles, Dexter junior Connor Kniesteadt won his opening match 6-2, 6-1 over Jackson and then defeated South Lyon East in the semifinals 6-2, 6-1. He lost to champion Ben Wei of Okemos 6-0, 6-1 in the finals.

Dexter’s one doubles team of Andrew Boydston and Steven Merz won their opening match 6-1, 6-0 over Fenton and then fell to eventual champion Okemos in the semis.

Dexter’s two doubles team of Jack Richards and Jack DeMerell defeated Jackson 6-0, 6-3 in the opening round before falling to eventual champion Okemos 6-0, 6-0 in the semis.

At three doubles, the Dexter team of Nolan Lemke and Oliver Pham lost 6-1, 6-1 to eventual champion Okemos in the first round.

At four doubles, the Dexter team of Gavin Heichel and Alex Gullekson won 6-0, 6-1 in the opening round over Fenton. The team lost 6-4, 7-5 to East Lansing in the semis.
