Bullseye: Dexter Trap Team wins Conference 4 league title

Written by Jim Kralik

The Dexter Trap Team (DTT) fielded 20 shooters during the 2022 Spring League, shooting one 25-target practice round and two rounds of 25 targets for an official score each week. Conferences are based on team sizes; DTT competed in Conference 4 with the top 13 scores posting against our competition. Other teams in our conference were Napolean, Milan, Vicksburg, Ionia, Clare, Sandusky, Camden-Frontier, and Hillsdale Academy.

Despite some wet, cold, and blustery shooting conditions, DTT grabbed the lead at week 1 of the competition and held on through the 5-week program.

Lorenzo Biundo tied for 21st place in the Top 100 Shooters Overall and tied for 18th in the Top 25 Male Shooters for the 2022 Spring League posting a 23.40/50 target average. Following Lorenzo were Will Laurin (27th-tie/23.10 avg Overall and 24th-tie Male Shooters), Kason Lambert (34-tie/22.90 avg Overall), Will Durbin (34-tie/22.90 avg Overall), Whitley Fowler (68-tie/22.30 avg Overall and 7th-tie Female Shooter), Domenic Biundo (86-tie/22.0 avg Overall), and Alexander Dromazos (96-tie/21.80 avg Overall).

This was Domenic’s first taste of competitive trap shooting which was capped off by shooting his first 25-straight at the Armada Fall Classic held at B&BS Gun Club in Ray, Michigan on Saturday October 29th. Tradition is, upon shooting your first 25-straight, your teammates throw your hat up in the air and shoot it. Those getting their hat shot during the 2022 Fall League were Nathaniel Terbush and Rebekah Murillo. In total, there were nine 25-straights achieved in League competition this fall.

In Conference 4 shooting, 9 Dexter men placed in the Top 25 Male; Lorenzo Biundo #3, Will Laurin #4, Will Durbin and Kason Lambert tied at #5, Domenic Biundo #11-tie, Alexander Dromazos #13, Trey Ouimet #17, Jack Matos #20-tie, and Nicholas Hoffman #23-tie.

Whitley Fowler

Lady Dread shooters occupied 5 of the Conference 4 Top 25 Female Shooter positions with Whitley Fowler at #1, Rebekah Murillo #2, Kera Root #3, Caitlyn Weidner #4 and new shooter Lauren Simpson at #7.

DTT was invited to participate in the 2022 Armada Fall Classic on Saturday, October 29th, and fielded 9 shooters to compete in the fog against larger teams from Armada, Richmond, Memphis, and Lake Shore (98 shooters total). When the gun smoke, and fog, cleared, DTT’s Top 5 scores placed them in 3rd place with Lorenzo Biundo grabbing Top Varsity Male with a 96/100 and Rebekah Murillo grabbing Top Junior Varsity Female with an 85/100.

Next up is our Fall League banquet and award’s ceremony when the team will relax from the competition and some fun shooting will be going on. DTT shoots as part of the USA High School Clay Target League based in Minnesota with teams participating in 40 of the 50 states.

Head Coach is Mr. Bill Hoffman. The Ann Arbor Moose Sportsman’s League, Moose Lodge #1253 continues to host the team, providing the trap fields, safety officers, and assistant coaching staff. There is also a very active group of family members that help out. DTT meets Monday evenings for practice and League competitions.

Trapshooting is a sport that can last a lifetime. We continue to see increased interest locally in what remains the fastest growing, and safest, high school sport in the nation. DTT is looking for team members from the Dexter School District, 8th through 12th grades, that can demonstrate safe firearms handling, are willing to be coached, and want to have fun in a team environment!
