Boys Basketball: Dexter comeback falls just short in opening loss to Bedford

The Dexter boys’ basketball team opened the season last week with a tough opponent and a loss but plenty of positives for a team that will take a few games to find its chemistry and mojo.

The Dreadnaughts trailed 10-9 after one quarter and 22-17 at halftime against a very strong Bedford team. The Kicking Mules outscored the Dreads 18-14 in the third quarter before Dexter made a fourth-quarter comeback in what turned out to be a 46-44 loss.

“We didn’t shoot the ball well in the first half and had to overcome a lot of foul trouble in the second half as we just don’t have a lot of size this year,” said Dexter Coach Jason Rushton. “But this team competes and they battled their way back against a good team. We executed well in the second half and we had two quality looks at a shot to tie or take the lead at the end of the fourth quarter but came up short.”

Reeves Taylor led Dexter with 14 points and 5 rebounds. The senior “quarterback” scored in every quarter for the Dreads. Evan Haroldson picked up his fourth foul early in the third, but came up big down the stretch. He finished with 13 points and 5 rebounds. AJ Vaughn has seven points and Xavier Blumberg dished out 6 assists and had 3 steals. Jack Demerell had four points.

Dexter plays Ann Arbor Huron on Tuesday in an SEC Red matchup.
