The Dexter boys’ basketball team opened the 2023 portion of their schedule against visiting Saline on Tuesday night and were stung by the Hornets 58-49 despite playing well against their SEC rivals.
Dexter came out strong and took a 16-14 lead after the opening quarter. But the Hornets used an 18-10 second-quarter run to take a 32-26 halftime lead. Dexter outscored Saline 12-10 in the third quarter to keep it close before Saline ended the game with a 16-11 fourth-quarter run.
“We had a solid game plan going into this game being outsized and came out strong,” said Dexter Coach Jason Rushton. “Now it’s just a matter of our young team improving to finish these games as we had the lead down to three points late in the game.”
The Dreads will continue to work on playing a complete 32 minutes – and they are “almost there.”
“I couldn’t be more proud of the fight this group has in the way we battle bigger and more athletic teams,” Rushton said. “It’s a fun group to coach day in and day out…and when we learn how to finish our games, we will be a very tough team come March.”
Evan Haroldson continued his strong season with 11 points, 9 rebounds and 8 assists. Reeves Taylor added 10 points and 6 rebounds. AJ Vaughn also had 10 points and Garrett Sharp chipped in 9.
The Dreadnaughts have a busy and big weekend. They host rival Chelsea on Friday with their game starting at 7 p.m. The girls’ varsity game will tip off at 5:30 p.m., for what is always an exciting doubleheader with the Bulldogs. They also play on Sunday at Madison Heights Bishop Foley in the MLK Showcase.
