Girls Basketball: Dreads come up short in loss to Chelsea (See WLD photogallery)

Late in the third quarter, Dexter’s Chloe Perry slammed hard into the bleachers chasing down a loose ball in the Dreadnaughts’ game with visiting Chelsea. The senior not only jumped right back up, but jumped right back into the fray without missing a beat.

Later in the boys’ game, Chelsea’s Joey Cabana was hurt on a play and tried to continue on but the officials made him leave the court. He went right to the scorer’s table and checked right back into the game.

When Dexter plays Chelsea in basketball, there is no holding back. It’s a game that both teams circle when the schedule comes out and a game one team will brag about when the game is over.

Friday night’s varsity doubleheader began with the girls’ game, and as expected both teams came out playing hard – and playing well. These are two talented basketball teams with some very good players. The Bulldogs broke open a close game with a strong second half, scoring 15 points in both the third quarter and fourth quarter to score a 62-47 win over Dexter.

The visiting Bulldogs knocked down 10 triples in the game. Dexter shot the ball well at times, making nine triples on the night but scored just 10 points in the third quarter and never really recovered.

Dexter’s Alena Blumberg had a huge first half. The sophomore made three triples and scored all 13 of her points in the first two quarters. Perry finished with 13 points, scoring nine from the free-throw line. Heidi Fuchs had a strong game, knocking down a pair of triples and finishing with eight points. Kendall Cabana had two three-pointers and scored six, Alyssa Gullekson had five points and Addison Chase scored three for the home team.

Chelsea opened the game with a 5-0 run. But a triple and field goal from Blumberg cut the deficit to 7-5. Fuchs hit a triple to cut Chelsea’s lead to 9-8. With 1:45 left in the quarter, Dexter took its first lead of the game at 10-9 on a nice drive to the basket by Gullekson.

Dexter led 12-11 after one quarter.

A triple by Cabana pushed Dexter in front 15-11. Blumberg hit two triples to give the home team a 22-18 lead. But the Bulldogs finished the quarter on a 14-3 run to take a 32-25 halftime lead.

Chelsea picked up right where it left off early in the third quarter, taking leads of 36-25, 39-25 and 42-25.

But the Dreadnaughts fought back. A triple by Perry and then a triple by Fuchs cut the lead to 42-32 and the lead was down to 10 points.

Chelsea led 47-35 after three quarters.

The Bulldogs pushed the lead to 53-40 with 4 minutes left to go. Cabana’s three-pointer cut the lead to 53-43 but Dexter would get no closer as the Bulldogs finished strong.
