Swimming: Dreadnaughts fall to Saline in SEC dual-meet

Dexter had a tough back-to-back road trip with Skyline on Jan. 12 and Saline on Thursday as the Dreadnaughts took on two of the better swimming programs in the state. Saline swam past visiting Dexter 117-69 in the SEC dual-meet.

Dexter falls to 4-3 on the season in dual-meets. And it doesn’t get any easier for the Dreads, who host defending Division 1 state champion Pioneer on Thursday. Pioneer easily defeated Skyline and Saline earlier in the season.

There were plenty of strong performances for the Dreadnaughts against Saline.

Dexter’s team of Jude Smith, Grady Wheeler, Steven Merz and Lucas Greatorex took second in the medley relay in 1:53.22. In the 200 free relay, the Dexter team of Travis Fitch, Jack Haidl, Dane Lee and Liam MacNeil touched second in 1:44.58. In the 400 free relay, the Dexter team of Lucas Greatorex, Dylan O’Connor, Eric Smaby, and Matthew Resende was second in 3:35.84.

O’Connor, a junior, won the 200 free in 1:53.59. Resende, another talented junior, won the 50 free in 23.12.

Dexter’s Branden Anderson was third in diving with 172.50 points.

Resende won his second race when he touched first in the butterfly in 54.07.

Greatorex was second (53.29) and Smaby third (53.87) in the 100 freestyle.

The Dreadnaughts went one-two in the 500 free. Haidl touched first in 5:06.18 with Lee taking second in 5:16.64.
